1. ST PAUL'S CHURCH
This
church belonged to the Dominicans and possesses three Rubens paintings.
The first represents the "Glorification of
the Holy Eucharist" and was painted in 1609-1610. The
second painting is the magnificent "Adoration
of the Shepherds" (see left). Also this work was painted
by Rubens shortly after his return from Italy to Antwerp. The influence of
the Italian masters can be seen especially in the coloration. The third
painting is "The Flagellation of Christ".
It forms part of a series of panels which represent the "15 Mysteries of
the Rosary". It was painted around 1617. Other paintings of this series
come from Anton van Dijck and Jacob Jordaens.
2.MUSEUM ROCKOX HOUSE
Nicolaas Rockox was Lord Mayor
of Antwerp, art collector and close friend of Rubens. His former house in
the Keizerstraat is now a museum with a beautiful art collection. The
museum possesses two works by Rubens: "The
Virgin Mary in Adoration for the sleeping child Jesus"
(1613) and a "Crucifixion",
probably painted shortly before 1628.
3. ST JAMES'
CHURCH
The St.James' Church is
located not far from the Rubens house and was therefore the parish church
of the painter. Here he married Helena Fourment on the 6th of December
1630, here his children were baptized, and here the master himself lies
buried. Above the altar of his burial-chapel is the painting "Our
Lady with Christ-child on the arm, in the company of several saints".
