RUBENS PAINTINGS IN THE ROYAL MUSEUM
OF FINE ARTS IN ANTWERP

rubicoon.jpg (2569 bytes)Every Rubens admirer has to visit this museum, which is one of the richest in Belgium. There are more than twenty works here by Rubens.
The enormous "
Baptism of Christ in the river Jordan" is one of the earliest works here. It was painted in 1604-1605 in Italy. The way in which influences of Michelangelo and of the school of Venice are incorporated into this painting is characteristic of the eclecticism of Rubens' Italian period. There are also works representing the later, so-called "classical period": "The Nicolaas Rockox triptych" (1613-1615) and the "Venus Frigida" (1614).

The museum possesses an awesome collection of religiously inspired masterpieces by Rubens. To name but the most important: "The Last Holy Communion of St. Francis " (1618-1619), "Christ on the Straw", a small triptych painted for the Michielsen family, "The Holy Trinity" , "The Prodigal Son", "The Lance-thrust" (commissioned by Rubens' friend Nicolaas Rockox in 1620), "The Adoration of the Magi" (1624), painted for the St.Michael's' Abbey, "The Throning Madonna with Child with Saints", "The Education of the Virgin Mary" and "St. Theresa rescues Bernardinus of Mendoza from Purgatory".
