HOTELS

For extensive Hotel information about Brussels we suggest you consult our Hotels Belgium Site (click on the Hotels Belgium tag on the banner on top of this page).

TIPS

There are no strict rules for tipping in restaurants, bars, sightseeing tours.. Most of the time, Belgian people will round up the amount that they have to pay. e.g. If you have to pay 18,50 € (EURO), you give 20 €.

RESTAURANTS / FOOD

To fully explain the restaurant situation in Brussels, we should build a completely new web-site. Brussels is one of the main restaurant cities in Europe. If you want to know all about the best restaurants in Brussels you can consult the MICHELIN -guide for restaurants in Belgium. There are several restaurant areas in the center (e.g.: around the ST CATHERINE SQUARE / FISHMARKET where you will find numerous fish-restaurants, in the ISLOT - SACRE area near to the Grand'place where a lot 'tourist' restaurants are situated). If you want to try out the best restaurants you have to be prepared to leave the immediate center of town and take taxis to the suburbs. A decent meal in a good restaurant should cost around 25 € -30 € (EURO)
The typical fast-food of Belgium are FRENCH FRIES and again FRENCH FRIES and again FRENCH FRIES and again......French fries are mostly bought in 'FRITURES' (or French fries stands) which you will find on a lot of squares all around the city or in snack bars. The typical Belgian dressing to put on fries is : mayonnaise (putting ketchup on French fries is an American custom).

BEER

We try to be modest but it's hard : Belgium is the best beer country in the world. There are nowadays numerous beer shops around the 'Grand'Place' where you can buy most of the Belgian beers. New are the cardboard boxes which contain a few bottles of one specific kind of beer together with the matching beer glass (Note: in Belgium every beer has its own specially designed glass. Belgian beers do not taste good when drunk from a non-matching glass. Typical for Brussels are the fruit beers (cherry, raspberry, peach....)

SMOKING

Quite a lot of people still smoke in Belgium and Brussels. Smoking is forbidden in public spaces (trams, buses, railway station, airport, metro, churches, ..)
In most cafés and restaurant there are separate sections for smokers and non-smokers.
Cigarettes and tobacco can be purchased in most grocery shops, supermarkets, gas stations, newspaper stands. Cafés and restaurants will rarely sell cigarettes.
