A typical creek in the region of AssenedeAssenede

One of the oldest municipalities in Flanders, became a pilot municipality with Boekhoute, Bassevelde, and Oosteeklo upon the merger of the municipalities. This picturesque polder township borders on the Netherlands, and is located along the approaches to the expressway linking Antwerp to the Belgian coast. The region offers a complete infrastructure for walking and cycling, interspersed with creeks and ancient farmhouses, surrounded by a wooded region at Oosteeklo.

Evergem

To the north of Ghent, by the canal, lies Evergem, a relatively extensive minicipality with many 'chateaux' (castles). Ertvelde is particulary wellknown for its chapel of Notre Dame de Stoepe, a wellknown place of pilgrimage, while the Church of St. George at Sleidinge is certainly worth a visit.

Zelzate

In the delta of the Scheldt, enjoys a very favourable geographic location with waterways, railways, and roads, which has led to the establishment of many industries. The history of the municipality is bound up with Ghent's wish for a direct link to the sea, which became a reality in 1827. The statue of the Mietje Stroel stands near the Municipal Hall.

On the Schipdonk canal, Nevele has a rich historic past, with remarkably well-preserved chateaux, gardens, and bell towers. The town can also boast of a remarkable literary past. Relics of this past are preserved in the 'Rietgaverstede' museum at Zomergem:

Zomergem

An agricultural municipality between Ghent and Bruges, characterized by a great number of chateaux and landed estates. The superb Municipal Hall on the Market Square is in the Flemish Renaissance style.

Lovendegem

Sightseeing by foot or bicycle on the banks of the Lieve will leave you with a lasting memory of relaxation.

Waarschoot
