'One only loves well what one knows well', says an old Flemish proverb. This is certainly true for the small rural villages of the Meetjesland. Eeklo is considered the chief town in this region of flat country, with its unsuspected beauty and small 'kreken', or creeks, and picturesque streams.

To the north are the polders, a marvellous region of poplarlined embankments: a country which should be visited by any daytripper keen on vast open plains and restful expanses of water. To the southwest are extensive wooded areas from past centuries: for example, the Drongengoed, the Keigatbossen, the Lembeek woods, or the provincial estate, 'het Leen', which offers the tourist an unspoilt natural environment measuring some 250 ha. This part of West Flanders is a rural region of wooded areas alternating with straight canals, interspersed with creeks: a paradise for walking or cycling, where the amateur photographer may enjoy himself to his heart's content.

Fine food also has a place of honour here: the region has many fine restaurants and regional delicacies, such as 'anguilles de riviere' and mussels.
Lovers of history and architecture should visit the region's seven museums, the cathedral north of Watervliet, and the Neo-Gothic church of St. Vincent at Eeklo.
The Meetjesland, in short, is an area of nature, where your lungs can regenerate, and countryside which you can only admire - inviting you to dream and relax, a region offering a thousand varieties of enjoyment and contentment.
