The Web Site of the Hohes Venn (Hautes Fagnes) Natural Reserve
In German and French

The entire area in the square between the cities of Eupen-Spa-Mützenich-Malmédy  is of great natural and tourist importance. The geographical name is 'LES HAUTES FAGNES', an area of moors and rugged heather land, situated at the highest point in Belgium. It is one of the most popular sites in Belgium for walking because of the natural richness and beauty.. Walking here is best done in the company of a guide.

The 'Hautes Fagnes' have also preserved some scars from the last ice age. Because of the altitude of this area, the ice melted slower than in other parts of the Low Countries. In the soil of the Hautes Fagnes were enormous lens-shaped ice cones, with the tip of the cone going downwards. When these ice cones had eventually molten, they had created little craters that were gradually filled up with mosses. However, until today one can still clearly see the outlines of these ice-age scars.

If you are in the Eupen area, why not go to the highest point in Belgium, the SIGNAL DE BOTRANGE ?  It lies at a (for Belgians) dazzling height of 694 m. There is a view tower and also a little artificial hill with an altitude of 6 m. If you climb the staircase on the hill you will be at an altitude of exactly 700 m above sea level.

Visitors who have been charmed by the already German feel of Eupen, could cross the Belgian-German border at Mützenich and visit the lovely medieval tourist city of MONSCHAU, with its castle, little alleys and canals.
