( RUINS OF ST. BAVO'S ABBEY)

This museum is housed in the ruins of the former St. Bavo Abbey. The collection consists of stone fragments from renovated or demolished buildings and monuments.

One can also see here an impressive collection of tombstones from the 13th to the 19th century. Most of these tombstones come from abbeys, monasteries and churches which at a certain moment in time decided to sell the old stones to make way for new ones.

One of the most important pieces is the tombstone of Hubert van Eyck (+ 1426), brother of Jan van Eyck, both painters of the wonderful 'Adoration of the Mystic Lamb' which can still be seen in the St. Bavo Cathedral.
