Brewery of the ' Gouden Carolus'.

The name of the brewery is " The Anchor " (Het Anker). From this brewery comes the pride of Mechelen, the excellent " Gouden Carolus " beer.  The offices are in a step-gabled building of 1625. It was originally a part of the Beguinage that lies behind it. The Beguinage has ceased to be a religious place and in 1870 the brewery has moved in the hands of the  family that still runs it.

The name of the dark sweet-tasting beer means "Golden Charles". It most probably refers to Emperor Charles V (1500 - 1558) who grew up in Mechelen at the court of his aunt Margaret of Austria. The Brewery can be visited and even rented by groups for dinners, suppers or banquets.

It has been the home of the Royal Tapestry Factory 'Gaspard De Wit' since 1987.Since more than a century this manufactory has been renovating old wall tapestries from Belgium and abroad. Also, new tapestries are woven here.
