Namur boasts several important museums with a large selection of artistic, decorative and archeological treasures.

Gallo-roman pottery. THE ARCHEOLOGICAL MUSEUM (Musée Archéologique)

This museum possesses archeological findings from the Roman Period (1st century) till the Merovingian and Francian period (7th century). Numerous Roman artifacts were found in the area of Namur. On display in the museum are vases, ceramics and religious items that were found in Roman graves and Roman villas. Not to be missed are the collections of Roman floor mosaics that were found in the neighboring villages of Namur. The successors of the Romans (the Gallo-Romans, Merovingians and Francs) are also represented here through items that were discovered in tombs and settlements of that time.

This is another collection that gives an overview of art in Namur. It is more focused on art between the 11th and 17th century. It is situated in an 18th century house that was donated by the family of governor Gaiffier d'Hestroy to the province of Namur. The objects of the collection stem from the Middle-Ages and the Renaissance. Splendid examples are to be seen from : Medieval Mosan forging, altar pieces, copper forging , baptismal fonts in hardstone, armors, medieval textiles and stained-glass windows.

GROESBEECK DE CROIX MUSEUM (Rue J. Saintraint 3 - 5000 Namur  Tel: +32-(0)81-22.21.39)

The Groesbeeck de Croix museum on the outside.In this beautiful 18th century patricians house (built in 1751-1752) a collection of decorative art from the 18th century Namur is preserved : paintings, sculptures, wall decorations and architectural elements). Furthermore, there is a nice collection of witnesses of the famous Namur craftsmanship: glass items, crystal objects, furniture in the different Louis-styles, etc.

 

FELICIEN ROPS MUSEUM (Rue Fumal 12 - 5000 Namur)

This museum is located in an 18th century house ( renovated in the 19th century). In the 1960's Count Ferdinand Visart  de Bocarmé donated his collection of paintings by Felicien Rops to the province of Namur. The collection contains about a 1000 works, of which about 25% is on display. Felicien Rops (1833-1898) was a Belgian caricaturist and illustrator who met Charles Baudelaire in Brussels and who later moved to Paris to work there. His work is mostly based on his love for women. He was also a landscape painter.
