There
are several famous 'pouhons' in SPA. A 'pouhon' is the local word for
'water well' or 'source'. One of the wells is called the 'Pouhon
Prince-de-Condé'. The most famous one, however, is the 'Pouhon Pierre Le
Grand', which was named after the Russian Tsar Peter the Great who
visited SPA in 1717. The building where the well is situated dates from
1880. Inside there is a large painting representing all the famous guests.
At the end of the 'Rue Gérardy' stands the 18th century town hall. In front of it the 'Perron'-monument from 1596 symbolizes the freedoms of the city. In the Rue Royale are the Casino from 1920 and the Bath house which was built in 1920 in neo-classicist style. Visitors come here to enjoy several healing and curing baths ( such as peat-baths and baths in water that contains carbonic acid) , as well as different beauty treatments and massages. Another famous house is the 'Villa de la reine Marie-Henriette' (the wife of Belgium's second king Leopold II). It now houses the police office, the local law court and two museums: one museum is dedicated to the horse (a very important animal for the aristocrats who visited SPA) and the other museum 'Musée de la Ville d'Eaux', where the typical painted wooden objects can be seen that were the typical souvenirs of Spa. It is sometimes said that 'souvenir' have been invented in SPA. The Hôtel Brittanique, which is now a boarding school, was the headquarters of the German Kaiser during the occupation of the First World War.
