The
Saint Catherine Church, also known as the Church of the Beguinage, is
one of the oldest churches in Tongeren. This church in early Gothic style
was built originally built in 1294, but transformed numerous times
over the course of the centuries. For example, the present Baroque vault was
constructed in the 18th century. After the French Revolution, the church
became property of the Tongeren Commission for the alm-houses. The church
was subsequently rented to the Friar Minors, which explains why the church
is also known under the name of "Friars Church". The church has a lot of atmosphere and posseses a rich collection of art objects, amongst which especially the woodcarving and the paintings stand out. The most impressive attractions are the pulpit of Robrecht Verburgh from 1711 in Louis XIV-style, the painting above the main altar by Gaspar de Crayer from the 17th century and the sculpture of the Suffering Christ, donated by the beguine Anna de Floz.
